Student Opportunities

The Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences offers many opportunities for undergraduate聽and graduate students.

Undergraduate Opportunities

Neuroscience Major and Minor

色香视频's bachelor of science degree in neuroscience is an interdisciplinary major offering coursework and research opportunities from faculty in various departments and colleges. The curriculum is designed to allow students to explore the structure and function of the nervous system.

A student with a GPA of at least 2.25, can minor in neuroscience with the approval of the Psychology Department Chair. Declarations must occur prior to the completion of the first semester of the junior year.

Neuroscience Student Research: Exploring New Treatments for Corneal Pain

Meet Professor Ian D. Meng, Ph.D., and Gillian Singer (Neuroscience 鈥23) as they study ocular pain by mapping out the corneal nerves.

Neuroscience Club

The Neuroscience Club holds a number of events throughout the year on a variety of neuroscience topics. It also raises funds for the Michel T. Goulet Foundation and works to educate children and adults on traumatic brain injuries and diseases.

The club caters to individuals who have an interest in all things neuroscience. Activities, fundraisers, and meetings are all centered around neuroscience-related events. All students are invited to join this club 鈥 not just neuroscience majors and minors.

The Neuroscience Club typically meets two to three times per month. For more information email Michael Burman at mburman@une.edu.

Research

Interested in working in a neuroscience lab? One of the best ways to determine if you want to go into a career in neuroscience is to volunteer or work in a lab.

Finding a passion for research, global experiences, and public health

When Andrew Elkinson 鈥20 came to 色香视频 to study biomedical science and mathematics, he never imagined his 色香视频 experience would help him find a passion for research, global experiences, and public health.

Andrew has showed an interest in research since his early career as a student. During the summer of his freshman year, he had the opportunity to work in the lab of Dr. Tamara King, Associate Professor of Physiology at the 色香视频College of Osteopathic Medicine. Working with Dr. King, other researchers, medical students, and undergraduate students, Andrew鈥檚 work focused on understanding temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osteoarthritis (OA), a disorder that impacts the jaw and creates chronic jaw pain. He also worked to discover why women are more commonly diagnosed with TMJOA and are more likely to seek care at tertiary orofacial pain clinics. Together with Dr. King鈥檚 research team, Andrew examined whether descending pain modulatory pathways from the rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM) protects males from development of TMJOA pain. He was able to present his work with Dr. King at the Society of Neuroscience Conference in Chicago.

鈥淭he research I have performed working with Dr. King has involved osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and temporomandibular disorder. Working closely with Dr. King, we have explored methods of alleviating pain, pathogenesis of pain, and clinical applications of specific drug use, such as risperidone, on the development of osteoporosis and anxiety.

"Students from countries around the world came to the conference to share their research, and that was incredible to be a part of. Whether they were from China, Spain, or South Africa, everyone came together to share their findings on topics such as Parkinson鈥檚 disease and Alzheimer鈥檚 disease. It was such a positive experience to see so many people coming together with the shared goal of furthering science and helping others.鈥

However, Andrew鈥檚 trip to Chicago was not his first opportunity to travel as a representative of 色香视频. In fact, one factor in helping Andrew decide to attend 色香视频 was the vast array of global education programs 色香视频 offered. 鈥淚鈥檝e always had an itch to travel. When I discovered that 色香视频 had a campus in Tangier, Morocco, I couldn鈥檛 stop wondering what it would be like to study there. I was fortunate to spend the 2017 fall semester on the Tangier Campus, which provided me with an exceptional learning environment. The labs were well equipped, the classes were small, and I was able to take all of the courses I needed to continue my medical biology degree. But most important, meeting new people and learning about Moroccan culture first-hand are experiences that will stay with me for the rest of my life.鈥

Experiential learning and the opportunity to develop global connections continued to drive Andrew. Working with 色香视频鈥檚 International Medical Missions Club led him to study marine life and corals in Belize, and his experience on a mission trip to Ecuador revealed a passion for public health.

鈥淲hen I was in Morocco, I shadowed an orthodontist, but in Ecuador, we worked with the Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children. Volunteering and giving back, while seeing the work the foundation did there, was really powerful. That experience sparked my interest in public health and my desire to protect and improve the health of people and their communities.鈥

Having hands-on learning in the field, whether it鈥檚 in a lab, or on the other side of the world, has always been essential for Andrew. It has allowed him to put scientific methods into practice and to understand the real human impact of his work. Programs like the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE)*, which Andrew participated in during the summer of 2019, enabled him to go beyond the textbook, gaining real-world experience, while making a real difference in the world. 鈥溕闶悠碘檚 opportunities to be involved in research and global education have allowed me to do something with my college career other than just get a degree,鈥 Andrew explained, 鈥渁nd the travel opportunities I have had at 色香视频 have helped me discover my interest in public health. In fact, I would encourage every student to have at least one global experience because it helps students understand the world and different cultures and are one of the most powerful weapons my generation can have in our academic arsenal.鈥

With the culmination of his research and graduation fast approaching, Andrew intends to continue to dental school with the dream of supporting public health around the world.

Activities

K-12 Outreach

The Neuroscience Club encourages all members to participate in the Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences' K-12 Outreach Program. This program unites faculty, staff, graduates, and undergraduate students while bringing interactive learning to area schools. The activities are designed to introduce such neuroscience topics as anatomy and physiology, injury and injury prevention, addiction, and cognition. Students are trained by 色香视频 staff and invited to go into local schools to teach students one of the many modules that the Neuroscience Center has developed.

色香视频 Brain Fair

The Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences at 色香视频 has created an annual Brain Fair to engage the local community in brain exploration. The goal of the fair is to promote interest in STEM disciplines (neuroscience in particular) within the greater community. Students, staff, and faculty develop neuroscience-related hands-on activities and experiments for the general public, resulting in a science museum-like experience for the local community. The fair is held in celebration of Brain Awareness Week.

Southern Maine Brain Bee

The Southern Maine Brain Bee is the first step in an international Brain Bee competition that brings together students from near and far to test their knowledge on brain-related topics. Hosted by the Center of Excellence in the Neurosciences, local high school students compete in a bee-like competition answering questions about the brain's: biology, cellular function, anatomy, physiology, psychology, and more. Prior to the Bee, the Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences will host some activities to help participating students prep for the Bee.

For more information on volunteer opportunities email the center at cen@une.edu.
