Experiential Education

Since Data Science is a brand-new major at ɫ����Ƶ, I get to work really closely with the math department to help develop the program. I give insights into the classes that they offer. Some of the classes don't even exist yet because it's so new, and I get to give feedback that could influence the way that those classes will look in the future. It’s cool to be part of a new major or a new field in general. The faculty and staff are really nice, and they're very open. I'm not afraid to give my feedback.

I’m a teaching assistant for the head of the department. He gives me a variety of projects to work on. There's one with a company called GWI where we are helping to develop a model to establish internet in rural communities in Maine. I’m also working on another project right now to model how many sections the department might need of certain math classes. I take the data and look at how many sections they had before and with how many students enrolled. I look at if the class is required for students. I then take all of that information and try to model a solution.

It’s really fun. Getting to work with real data and help make decisions for the department is real-life problem solving. It’s awesome.

Welcoming Community

The ɫ����Ƶ community is pretty tight, and all of the extracurriculars work together. I’m in a few clubs — math club, hunger initiative, and the NOLA service learning club.

Math club is new and small right now, but we’re working on making review packets for calculus to sell around campus before exams to help fundraise. We’re putting on a math meet soon to practice before the Maine state math meet. We think it’d be fun to get high schoolers together to practice.

ɫ����Ƶ is a fun place. It’s a small school, so you get to know a lot of people closely. The beach is so nice. I like to run down Hills Beach Road. It’s a beautiful place to live.

I did my first semester of college at a large state school in Massachusetts. During my first semester, I felt lost. It was a very big school, and I felt like I was being treated like a number. I didn’t feel personally connected to my professors. No one really knew my name. After the first month or so, I knew it wasn’t the right fit for me, so I started looking at other schools. I had always known of ɫ����Ƶ because I grew up vacationing in Old Orchard Beach with my family.

ɫ����Ƶ felt comfortable and there is so much opportunity for global exploration and experience. Coming back after time away, professional staff and fellow students are like, “Oh my gosh, we missed you.” I don’t know any other college that welcomes you in like that. ɫ����Ƶ embodies what I really want out of a school. It makes me my best self in every way possible. Also, I am able to be an athlete here and balance it with my academics, fieldwork, and research. I feel so well-rounded from my experience already. I am really grateful for my ɫ����Ƶ community.

At ɫ����Ƶ I always feel seen and heard, and I have never been spoken down to here because I am a student, because I am young, because I am female, or for any other reason. Even as a student athlete here, I have always been treated with so much respect, love, and kindness. ɫ����Ƶ is a place full of people with passion for what they are doing. I am inspired by this place and its people.

I love the education program. All of the professors are amazing, and everyone has their own kind of niche, which is really cool. I've had classes with all of the professors and my [academic advisor]. My advisor is all about special education and innovation in the way of different kinds of learners. She has taught me a lot about adapting to students’ different learning needs. 

Another of my professors is all about technology, innovation, and global studies. She has taught me a lot about education here in the U.S. versus other parts of the world. Then another is such a humanitarian. She cares so much about people, equity, and welcoming different kinds of cultures. 

It’s so interesting to get diverse perspectives from my different professors.
