Shelley Cohen Konrad, Ph.D., L.C.S.W., F.N.A.P.
Professor, School of Social Work
Director, Center to Advance Interprofessional Education and Practice
Location
Shelley Cohen Konrad PhD, LCSW, FNAP is the founding Director of the Center to Advance Interprofessional Education and Practice, the interprofessional hub of the University of New England. Shelley is also a professor in the School of Social Work. A clinical social worker by training Shelley specializes in practice with children and families and in interprofessional collaborative practice. The second edition of her book, Practice with Children and Families: A Relational Perspective was published in December 2019. In 1988 Shelley established Touchstone Psychotherapy Associates, a mental health collaborative designed to meet the complex needs of children, families, and carers. She co-founded the Kids First Center in 1997, a Portland-based non-profit program serving children, parenting partners, and families experiencing divorce and parental separation.
Shelley now focuses most of her professional attention on building and enhancing student, faculty, and practitioner skills for contemporary clinical and community practice with the goal of improving healthcare for all people. In 2010 she was named founding director of 色香视频's Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC), now known as the Center to Advance Interprofessional Education and Practice (CAIEP). CAIEP designs and implements collaborative programming that brings together students, community members, professional staff, and faculty to learn about, from and with each other. The purpose of shared learning is to prepare graduates to be both excellent in their chosen fields as well as proficient members of their future clinical and community practice teams. Aims of collaborative education include improving patient safety, promoting population health, advocating for social inclusion, lowering provider burnout, and advancing equitable, culturally-informed, quality health care.
Shelley's research and scholarship focuses on interprofessional education and collaborative care and measuring IPE鈥檚 impact on workforce practice. She鈥檚 also produced scholarship in the areas of the use of the arts in health education, health perspectives of vulnerable populations, and relational learning. Most recently she鈥檚 worked on several grant projects with MaineHealth including ones funded by the American Association of Medical Colleges to develop a toolkit to help providers address health misinformation with patients and colleagues and another SAMHSA grant investigating harm reduction.
Shelley鈥檚 an Associate Editor for the Journal of Interprofessional Care, the Journal of Interprofessional Education & Practice, and the Journal of Family Social Work. Her own work is widely published in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. She travels nationally and internationally to consult with other universities to help with building interprofessional education and collaborative learning at their sites. Shelley is on the steering committee of IPR.Global, a group that promotes global health and interprofessional initiatives through research and scholarship. She works closely with the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education to plan their annual Nexus Summit.
Shelley remains passionate about integrating the arts and health education and practice. Her new book, Social Work and the Arts: Expanded Horizons, co-edited with Dr. Michal Sela-Amit from USC, will be out in late 2023.
Shelley enjoys collaborating with faculty and students on innumerable projects. You鈥檒l find her at scohenkonrad@une.edu.
