Dan Mickool, R.Ph., M.S., Ed.D., director, Continuing Education, College of Pharmacy, recently delivered a presentation on interprofessional education (IPE) in Washington, D.C.

IPE strategies help physicians improve communication, collaboration and teamwork to give their patients a better experience.

鈥淚t鈥檚 no longer a solo practice where one person is driving the ship, but multiple players engaging with the patient at their own level of expertise to improve the patient experience and outcome,鈥 said Mickool.

Mickool uses IPE at the family clinic he teaches at in Augusta.

鈥淲e have a mature and robust experience that I want to share with others across the nation,鈥 he said.

Mickool completed an IPE research project with fellow interprofessional collaborator Corey Smith, PsyD., of the Maine-Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency.

Together they shared the results at the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine鈥檚 Annual Spring Conference held in Washington, D.C. On May 8.

The audience was made up mostly of physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners who are teaching medical students and resident physicians through an academic affiliation.

The presentation was designed to give them practical tips for including IPE teaching into their current practice. Mickool and Smith also provided steps they can take to improve outcomes, both educationally and clinically, for their patients.

Mickool鈥檚 presentation was also based on the experiences he has had with IPE at the University of New England.

鈥溕闶悠 is a leader in terms of interprofessional education and collaboration. People across the University are doing a great job of disseminating knowledge, and I feel lucky to be part of that,鈥 he said.
