A group from the É«ÏãÊÓƵDepartment of Exercise and Sport Performance gave two presentations at the 2017 Maine Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MAHPERD) at the Samoset Resort in Rockport, Maine on November 6, 2017. They were invited to speak by Katie Hawke, M.S., associate clinical professor, who serves on the MAHPERD board.

Athletic Training Director Wayne R. Lamarre, M.Ed., LAT, ATC, Associate Clinical Professor, Kristen Bailey ‘02, M.S., LAT, ATC, and Angela Potter â€™00, assistant athletic trainer at the University of Southern Maine, presented a sports medicine update for coaches that included topics such as sport pharmacology, overuse injuries/athlete burnout and current techniques in the treatment of soft tissue injuries. 

Exercise and Sport Performance Chair Paul Visich, Ph.D., M.P.H., ACSM C-CEP, Rebecca Place ’10, and Rob Downing ’18 presented their research titled, "The Cardiovascular Health Intervention Program, The Current Health Status of our Children." They included an update on cardiovascular disease (CVD), current CVD risk factors in our children, physical changes observed in children's carotid arteries based on CVD risk factors and the importance of physical activity. This research was recently published in the Journal of Pediatrics.
