É«ÏãÊÓƵ Interprofessional Student Advisory Team holds Case Competition, winners move on to nationals
The University of New England’s Interprofessional Student Advisory Team (IPSAT) held its fourth annual Case Competition at the É«ÏãÊÓƵ College of Pharmacy on March 12, 2016. The É«ÏãÊÓƵ IPSAT Case Competition is based on the protocols set forth by the University of Minnesota’s CLARION Competition, which strives to improve patient safety and the quality of care through the promotion and development of interprofessional leadership, teamwork, and communication.
Student teams, comprised of four students from at least two different professions, were given a fictitious, healthcare system-based case and charged with conducting a root cause analysis and quality improvement recommendations. The team then presented their analysis and recommendations to a panel of interprofessional judges who evaluated the plan based on feasibility, creativity, communication and evidence of interprofessional teamwork.
This year, the competition had student representations from the College of Pharmacy, Nursing, the College of Osteopathic Medicine, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Dental Medicine, and Medical Biology. It was the most diverse group of students ever to participate.
Three interprofessional student teams participated in the IPSAT Case Competition. Members of the winning team were Chelsea Hockman, Kelly Carreiro, Briana Kelly and Megha Panchal. These students will go on to represent É«ÏãÊÓƵ at the national CLARION Competition in Minneapolis, Minnesota on April 15 –16, 2016.
In the past three years that É«ÏãÊÓƵ has been participating, our teams have placed 2nd (2013) and 3rd (2015) in the national CLARION Competition.
The É«ÏãÊÓƵ IPSAT Case Competition was made possible by the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) Student-led Interprofessional Mini-Grant Program, and other fundraising efforts. The winning team in the local competition was awarded a $3,000 team scholarship, which was generously funded by the Office of the Provost and the Office of Research and Scholarship.
A special recognition to all members of the Case Competition Planning Committee: Cathy Ng, Jhoana Meza, Christine Lin, Sarah Nguyen, Maurice Bailey, Marissa Stevens, Ray Loffredo, Courtney Burkham, and Bruno De Maria for their commitment to interprofessionalism and making this year's competition a success, as well as the IPSAT Executive Board: Liam Lombard, president; Cathy Ng, vice president; Courtney Burkham, secretary; Ray Loffredo, treasurer; Emily Cyr, public relations Chair; Bruno De Maria, fundraising chair; Marissa Stevens, GAPSA liaison; Rebecca Boulos, IPSAT faculty advisor; and Jeff Nevers, IPSAT coach, for their continuous efforts fostering interprofessionalism at É«ÏãÊÓƵ and among the community.
