Ron Deprez publishes study in ‘Maine Policy Review’
Ron Deprez, Ph.D., M.P.H., associate research professor at the University of New England, recently published a study about waste management programs in Maine for Maine Policy Review.
Trash disposal is a public service that municipalities are required to provide by law to residents and businesses for health and safety reasons. As a public health researcher, Deprez says programs to reduce MSW need to be equitable and fair to both residents and businesses. His study is unique in that it addresses MSW from the perspectives of public health and safety, equity and the physical environment. According to Deprez, “Municipal solid waste (MSW) is a huge issue for towns across the state, and while there are many ways to address this issue that are both cost effective and promote recycling, municipalities should understand all of the costs and benefits of whatever policies they implement.”
