Neil Hammerschlag, research partner of James Sulikowski, interviewed on NPR’s “Fresh Air”
Neil Hammerschlag, research assistant professor in the University of Miami’s Rosentiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, was interviewed on the NPR program “Fresh Air.” Hammerschlag is the research collaborator of James Sulikowski, Ph.D., professor of Marine Sciences at the University of New England.
Hammerschlag discussed the tiger shark research that he and Sulikowski are conducting in the Bahamas, in an area known as Tiger Beach. To study the reproductive behavior of these tiger sharks, the team used an ultrasound machine similar to the technology used on pregnant humans. It’s a technique refined by Sulikowski and Hammerschlag that allows researchers, for the first time in history, to test sharks for pregnancy without killing them first.
Hammerschlag also spoke about the personality differences between sharks, threats to the shark population and what to do if you encounter a shark in the water.
