ɫƵ’s Portland Campus Art Gallery Features “Portraits of the Artist” Exhibition
The Art Gallery on the University of New England’s Portland Campus is currently showing an exhibition titled “Portraits of the Artist.” Curated by Stephen Halpert, the exhibition will run through February 7, 2016.
This exhibition includes formal portraits (such as James Joyce by Berenice Abbott) and advertising posters (such as Todd Webb’s photo of an Edith Piaf poster on a wall in Paris) in addition to other portraits of artists of all kinds -- actors, musicians, writers, poets, playwrights, composers, visual artists, filmmakers. The images are classic and contemporary, local, national and global in stature.
There are 110 subjects including a number from the University of New England’s Permanent Collection – Robert Frost, Berenice Abbott, Lotte Jacobi, May Sarton and Edna St. Vincent Millay among them. Works by 35 photographers are featured, many from the ɫƵ Collection, such as Danny Lyon, Stuart Nudelman, Verner Reed, Jan Pieter Van Voorst Van Beest and Todd Webb.
This exhibition is part of a year-long state-wide collaboration, the Maine Photo Project, supported in part by the Maine Arts Commission and the Maine Office of Tourism.
