Jennifer Tuttle gives lecture at É«ÏãÊÓƵ Art Gallery on ‘A Gateless Garden’ exhibition
Jennifer S. Tuttle, Ph.D., Dorothy M. Healy Professor of Literature and Health in the Department of English, delivered a talk at the É«ÏãÊÓƵ Art Gallery on March 12, 2015.
Titled "Beyond Vacationland: 'A Gateless Garden' and Maine Women's Writing," the lecture explored the Art Gallery's current exhibition "A Gateless Garden" and the book on which it is based, in both of which original photographs of Maine are paired with quotations from Maine women writers gleaned from the Maine Women Writers Collection's holdings.
Through the lens of American literary regionalism and the interpretive practice of ekphrasis --using one work of art to explain another--Tuttle assessed the ways that "A Gateless Garden" forwards a Maine women's literary tradition that is tied to place and to feminist principles of social change.
