2014 Student Research and Scholarship Symposium winners announced

Winners of the 色香视频2014 Student Research and Scholarship Symposium have been announced.  The symposium was held Friday, May 2nd at the Alfond Forum on the Biddeford Campus.

This annual symposium, now in its 15th year, allows students to present their research, classroom projects, art work, or other work done at 色香视频 in eitheran oral presentation, poster, presentation, or artistic display format.

Oral Presentations

Thirty-five oral presentations were made this year.  The presentations covered topics ranging from 鈥淐olored Water:  How Varying Light Regimes Affect Guppy Behavior鈥 to 鈥淗ollywood鈥檚 Invention of the Native American and the Myth of the Cowboy as History,鈥 from 鈥淎 Study of Classical Japanese Death Poetry鈥 to 鈥淧renatal Origins of Placenta Previa.鈥

Honors Presentations

Among the oral presentations were five Honors Theses presentations by the following students:  Natalie Ingram, 鈥淭he Effect of Temperature on the Gestation and Survivability of the Little Skate (Leucoraja erinacea)鈥; Liese Carleton, 鈥淗ormonal and Morphological Changes in the Shell Gland of an Oviparous Elasmobranch (Leucoraja erinacea); Janithri Wickramamayake 鈥淚nvolvement of Arachidonic Acid Signaling in the Synthesis of Inducible Compounds in Brown Macroalgae;鈥 Nicole Hunter 鈥淗arbor Seal (Phoca vitulina) Pup Behavioral Consistency;鈥 and Tara Boag, 鈥淎ge and Size at Sexual Maturity of the Black Dogfish (Centroscyllium fabricii).鈥

Poster Presentations and Art Displays

Additionally, there were eighty-four poster presentations and art displays, including 鈥淟andscape Photography and Nature Writing,鈥 鈥淭he Effects of Attendance on Home Game Contest Outcomes,鈥 鈥淭he Effect of Exercise on Self-Perception,鈥 and 鈥淚nvestigation of the Role of Annexin A4 in Regulating MOR.鈥

Awards

Each award winner will receive a certificate and monetary award from the Office of the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.

Oral Presentation

  • First Prize: Lindsey Lavin 鈥 鈥淎n Exploration of Preference for Shoaling in the Presence of an Orange Stimulus in Trindadian Guppies (Poecilia reticulata)鈥
  • Runner Up: Daniel Eggleston, Cecelia French, and Stephanie Beeckel 鈥 鈥淧sychological and Autonomic Effects of Art Making in College-Aged Students鈥

Honors Thesis Presentation

  • First Prize: Tara Boag 鈥 鈥淎ge and Size at Sexual Maturity of the Black Dogfish (Centroscyllium fabricii)鈥

Artistic Exhibit

  • First Prize:  Kate Hruby 鈥 鈥淏eauty or Destruction: An Artistic Photo Campaign for Fossil Fuel Divestment鈥

Poster Presentation

  • First Prize: Sam Peterson 鈥 鈥淪ea Level Rise in the Saco River Estuary鈥
  • Runner Up (tie): Jessie Roh 鈥 A King and His Fool: An Analysis of Shakespeare's Use of Characters as Social Commentary;
