Jump Starting IPE: Simulation, Case Study, and Reaction in Introductory Undergraduate Social Work; Health, Wellness and Occupational Studies; and Education Courses

Undergraduate students from Social Work; Education; and Health, Wellness and Occupational Studies (HWOS) who are at the beginning of their programs participated in an interprofessional simulation experience. To augment traditional instruction relying on readings and PowerPoints, students participated in interprofessional simulation based on a case study relevant to all professions. Initial data and results will be presented, as well as a blueprint for replication for other programs.

The Maine LEND Family Interprofessional Team: Enhancing Training, Practice, Leadership and Community Connections through Interprofessional Family Centered Practice

A four-session uni-professional experience to prepare pharmacy students for an interprofessional team immersion program

The interprofessional team immersion (IPTI) is a longitudinal and cross-professional learning experience. In order to deepen this experience, pharmacy students attend four additional mini-sessions. Students meet to write their elevator speech, discuss the patient case and complete debrief sessions. Faculty coaching and modeling during these sessions reinforces important interprofessional behaviors.

Over-prescription of opioids to treat chronic pain has led to addiction and overdose. Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine is a recommended non-pharmacolgic strategy for treating chronic pain. Engaging Patients in health care education, practice, and policy

This presentation illustrates the importance and necessity of engaging patient and family perspectives in multiple health care domains including education, practice and policy. It brings together concepts of patient satisfaction, culture, social determinants of health, patient safety, and quality of health care delivery. Presenters will offer examples of patient-professional collaborative initiatives and describe in poignant terms the ethical dilemmas of costly, uncoordinated medical care. Art, lecture, demonstration, stories, and experiential opportunities will be used to illustrate the import of patient-informed curriculum and practice.
About the Plenary Speakers
Kelly Harmon, DO '05 is a full spectrum family practioner with a specific interest in resident and medical student education, substance abuse treatment in pregnancy, and IPE.
Felix Hernandez, MD, MMM, FACS is a cardiothoracic surgeon that has retired from clinical practice after 25 years to become more involved in leadership and administration at Eastern Maine Medical Center. Currently he is the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education and Physician Advisor for Peri-Operative Finance. He is a graduate of Fairfield University and the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He completed his residency in General Surgery at Wayne State University and did his Cardiothoracic Residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He received his Masters in Medical Management from the Heinz School of Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University. He is the Regional Assistant Dean at the University of New England's College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Frank Bailey, M.Ed., is the Medical Educator at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Maine. He received a B.S. degree in Kinesiology, Physiology, and Education with a concentration in Developmental Disabilities and M.Ed. degree in Kinesiology, Physiology, and Education with a concentration in Curriculum Design from the University of Maine at Orono. He is a certified EQ coach through the Lynn Leadership Group. He deploys tailored EQ curricula throughout the healthcare organization, with the goal of increasing team function to provide phenomenal patient care. He has assisted in designing and implementing the University of New England’s College of Osteopathic Medicine Longitudinal Integrated Curriculum.
Dr. Shelley Cohen Konrad is Professor and Director of the É«ÏãÊÓƵSchool of Social Work and founding Director (2009) of the É«ÏãÊÓƵ-Interprofessional Education Collaborative, an initiative that promotes shared learning, research, collaborative practice and service. Shelley has 30 years of clinical social work experience serving children and families. She co-founded two community programs, Kids First and Touchstone that offer low barrier services to children and their identified family systems. Shelley’s research and scholarship focuses on relational practices, arts and social work, affective learning, cultural stakeholder engagement, and interprofessional pedagogy. Her book Practice with Children and Families: A Relational Perspective was published in 2013. Shelley has keen interest in developing transformative educational methods that prepare health and social care workers to balance the rigor and constraints of twenty-first century health care with person-centered, caring approaches. She is an avid reader, art collector, gardener, baker, and enjoys time with her family on the coast of Maine.
