6:00 pm - 6:00 pm
WCHP Lecture Hall in Parker Pavilion
Portland Campus
Barry Costa-Pierce
Free and open to the public

In our new world of massive ocean climate change, no country or person will be unaffected by what鈥檚 happening in the Arctic, and all of the great issues for our future 鈥 food, energy, water, waste and shelter 鈥 will require a fundamental rethinking and reordering of education and training to create the new institutions for the future. This presentation will review the opening of the Arctic and impacts of environmental change on shared ocean resources, such as fisheries, aquaculture development, and trade, and to the opportunities for the development of sustainable products and practices related to careers in the marine sciences connected to maritime industry. 鈥淢aine is the new 鈥榥ear-Arctic state鈥 in the emerging North Atlantic  seafood ecosystem,鈥 says Costa-Pierce, and our world is on the cusp of a great Arctic seafood science and trade revolution, and the Gulf of Maine is positioned 鈥 the front door to America 鈥 to be a hub of marine commerce, science and education with the Arctic countries.鈥
